Being a San Antonio Spurs fan, I was very intrigued when I saw that the Iceman had written a book. I bounced it for a while in Amazon WishList, and when it finally won the game, I purchased it and enjoyed all of it from the front row.
But I did enjoy reading how he got to be on the American Basketball Association (ABA) team, the Virginia Squires and how he played with Dr. J his first year. How cool is that? Later in his basketball years, Gervin, also played with Michael Jordan in his 2nd year with the Bulls.
The parts I also really liked were about his playing days with the Spurs. He mentioned a lot of former Spurs (Mike Mitchell, James Silas, Larry Kenon, Artis Gilmore, Johnny Moore, and Mark Olberding…just to name a few), he wrote about the final game one season when he and David Thompson were battling for the scoring title, and he talked about his passion for the community of San Antonio.
Even though he never won a Championship (he came close a few times), he has a lot of awards and he seems to have no regrets about it. He is a Hall of Famer, his Jersey is retired with the Spurs, and he was recognized as one of the top 50 players in 1996!
Just a quick personal story about him…
I was the manager of the Varsity basketball team in high school (1991 to 1995), and Gervin’s son, George Jr., played for another team and he always shot lights out against us. And, sometimes when those team played, George would show up to watch his son play.
