This is the 2nd book in the Jane Smith series. You definitely would need to read 12 Months to Live first, as a lot of the characters return for this book. For me, and at times, I was a bit confused with some of them, and found myself going back in the book to refresh my memory. The person Jane is defending is the same as the first book, and he is very pompous (I don’t like him, and I think that’s how James and Mike wanted him to be perceived). The crime Mr. Pompous is accused of is also the same as the first book, but a different family of three.
Jane is a criminal defense attorney, and in the first book, she is diagnosed with cancer and is given 12 months to live (thus, the title of the first one). Despite that and the chemotherapy treatment she is going through, she fights for her life (as a cancer patient and as bad people want to get to her to stop doing what she does best). She has a strong network of close people (her boyfriend, her sister, her best friend, who is also a doctor she sees, and her criminal defense investigation partner, who is also a former cop).
Just like the first book, I enjoyed this one and can’t wait for me. Lots of surprises, and as each chapter is short, I had a hard time putting it down.
